John T. Freeman was born in London 1958 and studied painting at Bath Academy of Art (Corsham) 1976-77 and then at Chelsea School of Art 1977-80.

Since leaving college, whilst continuing to paint, he has developed a particular interest in etching and is now considered by some to be one of the most important and innovative living etchers. Examples of his work can be seen in his books, in particular “I London” and “Paris Workings” and found in the collections of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and the Glynn Vivian Museum in Swansea. He has also exhibited widely, both nationally and internationally.

Teaching is an important part of his working life and over the past few years he has taught in several institutions, including Hurtwood House, the Prince of Wales Drawing School and currently at West Dean College. John has also delivered many lectures, most notably at Tate Britain, mainly about Eighteenth Century British Art in which he has a particular interest and an encyclopaedic knowledge.

'Portrait Drawing' 2006

Published by The Crowood Press

ISBN 1 86126 8548

Aimed at all those interested in drawing the human face, "Portrait Drawing" introduces a traditional method of teaching that uses a structured and natural process of continuous revision based on the principle of working from the general towards the particular. This enables the student to understand not only how to do it, but more importantly why.

"Portrait Drawing" will help the student build confidence and an understanding of themselves and their work within the ancient tradition of portraiture. Written in the manner of one of the author's highly acclaimed tutorials, each stage is presented in a practical and informal way, which attempts to clarify misconceptions and reduce the anxieties usually associated with portraiture. The course contains detailed step-by-step guidance covering all aspects of the face.
